Another form of polished concrete is the burnished finish. Due to it’s beauty and durability this floor finish is becoming increasingly popular amongst developers, builders, homeowners and the architectural community. A beautifully burnished floor is entirely reliant on the way the concrete is poured and finished by the concreter. There are several technical facts that must be strictly followed by the concreter when pouring and finishing the concrete in preparation for a burnished finish. After the concrete has been poured the concreter must use a power trowel (helicopter) and trowel the floor with this repeatedly to create the burnished look. This is done repeatedly to make the floor extremely flat, smooth and to create a certain level of sheen. All footprints, screed marks and any other surface imperfections must be removed during the helicopter / power troweling process before the concrete sets.

Another important factor is the level of the floor to the edges. Uneven power troweling with the helicopter will ultimately result in an uneven floor leaving low and high points. These high and low points will be highly visible in the finished product. The slab must also be power troweled as close to the edges as possible in order for there not to be a noticeable picture like frame around the perimeter once the floor is polished. If the slab is not precisely burnished and finished correctly, a burnished finish may not be possible. If this is the case the suitable alternative would be to mechanically polish the floor with minimal stone exposure allowing more material to be removed in order to remove the surface imperfections.

LOWER COST

The initial service costs are somewhat lower than the other polished concrete options.

LOW MAINTENANCE

The nature of the surface and low porosity level means that less effort is required to keep the floor clean.

BACTERIA RESISTANT

Surface is non-porous and will not harbour bacteria which in turn provides a healthy environment.

FREE CHOICE OF GLOSS

Matte, semi-gloss or the high gloss finish.

OUTDOOR OPTIONS

There are outdoor options available in a UV stable finish.
